My wife announced to me that she decided to change her last name to mine.
My first impulse was to say, "Don't do it! You'll spend the rest of your life telling people how to spell your name, and then they'll spell it wrong anyway!!"
Algernon, tell her not to do it! It is a nasty remnant of the old, woman-as-chattel mentality. Besides, how will old friends find her if her name has changed unbeknownst?
My wife had planned to keep her name, but then changed her mind at the eleventh hour before we got married. She uses her maiden name as her middle name, but no hyphen, thank you.
As the daughter and step-daughter of two women who kept their own names, I'm continually surprised by the number of women my age who take their husband's names. I grew up believing that it was an old-fashioned thing to do, yet clearly that's not the case....

Funny, I was just wondering the other day if she used your name or not.
Perhaps it says a lot about how much she loves you! :)
Just don't hyphenate!

Thanks for the tip, Avril, although I'm sure you'll understand that I don't *tell* my wife to do things or not. This one is her call.
